We love our cars. We want them to look great, and stay looking new as long as possible. Sometimes, to make sure that our car, van, or SUV looks new for longer, we install some paint protection film .
Indeed, our car, SUV, or van protective film can keep the paint job intact, can make bug splatters and bird droppings much easier to clean, and can protect your vehicle from scrapes and scratches from road debris.
Yet, we may have made the mistake of going to a car or van protective film shop that does less-than-quality work, or the film on our vehicle is just getting old. The old adage “you get what you pay for” is so very true. If you paid that great low price for car or van protective film, and now your vehicle’s paint protection film is peeling or getting cloudy in certain spots, then you probably paid for a low-quality job.
At Tint Tech, Calgary’s top auto protection film specialists, we keep quality as our number one priority. We keep our prices affordable, but we make sure that our work is done right the first time. That is why we employ only the best trained and certified paint protection film specialists.
Tint Tech not only installs quality paint protection film, but we are also happy to remove your car or van’s protective film so that you can improve your vehicle’s appearance.
So, what do you do if you need to have your paint protection film removed? You should make sure that you go to an established tint shop to help you with the job.
Nothing in life is ever permanent, which can be a good thing when it comes to paint protection film. Even things that you think are permanent can be removed – like tattoos. So, have no fear if your car or van’s protective film is unsightly and needs to be removed. It can be done.
In fact, many car and van protective film products have a specified life span after which you must remove it and replace it with a new one. Tint Tech, of course, can help you with that too. That is because you really need a trained technician to remove car and van protective film properly.
The answer to that question is – it could. Over time the adhesive quality of the protective film can diminish. That, in turn, would make it easier to remove the film. That being said, however, not all of the film may be easily removable.
Here is how we test how easy it is to remove the film by just peeling it. We take any plastic or nylon auto trim tool, and lift a portion of the film at any edge that is beginning to peel. We test if it comes off easily. However, if we feel any resistance, or if the film comes off in small pieces or shreds, then we employ a heat gun.
From a distance of about 8 to 12 inches from the surface of the vehicle, we hold the heat gun over an area of the protective film. The heat gun will, after a moment or two, begin to soften the film, making it easier to manipulate and peel. We are careful to make sure that the heat gun gets no closer to the car’s surface than 8 to 12 inches. Otherwise, the excessive heat on the vehicle’s surface could do other types of damage to the film or the paint job itself.
Once the heated area is softened, we then gently use a scraper (again, plastic or nylon is best) to dig under the film layer and peel away the film, hopefully in bigger strips. As we go along, we may also use some 3M adhesive remover under the film to continue the removal process.
In the removal process, our goal is to not only remove the old or faulty film but to maintain the integrity of the car’s paint surface. That only makes sense because it would be self-defeating to harm the paint job that the film was meant to protect in the first place.
With that in mind, our trained technicians try to take the removal process one small area at a time so we can understand how your particular protective film behaves with the heat gun. We are particularly careful around the various areas of the car, like the lights and front grill area.
In fact, the professionals at Tint Tech know that patience is the best tool when doing a paint protection film removal job. To be extra careful, the process is necessarily slow. But, that kind of patience and care pays dividends at the end of the job when we have successfully removed all of the old protective film.
